Formula 1 is set to return after a short break, with drivers heading back on track for the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. However, the opening phase of the 2026 season has already produced several unexpected storylines, particularly in the championship standings.

Only three races have been completed so far, in Australia, China and Japan, but the early results have significantly shaken up the grid.

Mercedes has emerged as the standout team, marking a long-awaited return to the front. Rookie driver Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with 72 points, followed closely by his teammate George Russell on 63. The team has established an early advantage in both performance and consistency.

Ferrari, meanwhile, remains within striking distance. Although the team is yet to secure a race win, Charles Leclerc has collected 49 points, while Lewis Hamilton sits on 41, keeping them firmly in contention.

In contrast, McLaren has struggled to replicate last season’s form. Defending champion Lando Norris has managed 25 points so far, with Oscar Piastri on 21.

One of the most notable developments has been Max Verstappen’s difficult start. The four-time world champion has scored just 12 points and currently sits ninth in the standings, a position that raises questions for Red Bull heading into the next phase of the season.
